Bubble Paint

Leo and I are home together on Wednesdays. I love that I get some extra time with my little man. I usually try to plan something fun for us to do, whether it's an outing, or some type of play experience that we haven't had before.

I spend a lot of time perusing Pinterest to come up with simple and fun ideas. I came across the idea to make bath time finger paints the other day. Leo does a lot of painting at school, so I thought he would enjoy this. I can't seem to find the source for this recipe, and there are many other recipes for bath paint using shaving cream or corn starch. But the one I read used baby powder and baby bubble bath.

I had both of these things on hand, so I figured why not. I had purchased an enormous bottle of baby powder when we were preparing for Leo's arrival when I felt like I needed supplies to be ready. I didn't realize that using talc based baby powder has fallen out of favor, so it was great to find a use for this huge bottle (well, aside from helping to remove sand from our legs at the beach—try it, it works!) I read that you can also use water, but the bubble bath adds a bubble element, which sounded fun. I just mixed the two together until I had a consistency I was happy with.

My goal with this blog is to try and share new fun things, without harping on making the process look perfectly beautiful. So, while a lot of other recipes show a beautiful rainbow of paint displayed in a muffin tin, I rummaged through my Tupperware drawer for three small containers, and kept it simple with the three primary colors. A few drops of food coloring was all it took.

It was a big hit. Leo scooped every last drop of paint out of those containers, and then he filled them with water and dumped them out a few times. Nothing like a multi-functional toy, right?

Bathroom Progress

Last weekend was a busy weekend around here. In addition to chasing mice and squirrels, hanging up the TV, and putting the living room back together, Greg also made some progress on the hole in our bathroom wall. Next step, tiling.

And a reminder of what it looked like before Greg put up the cement board.

The home improvement never stops. This record of it all is an amazing historical document!

Bathroom Storage

A few days before Thanksgiving, I put together this bathroom storage cabinet. And yes, I’m just getting around to talking about it. That’s what the holidays will do to you. This regrettably pink bathroom is slowly coming together. I’m trying to play up the black and white to give it a graphic quality.

You can see, without the cabinet, we were desperately in need of storage. Pedestal sinks may look nice, and make a room feel bigger, but where the heck are you supposed to put all your stuff? And this sink doesn’t have a flat surface anywhere, so you can’t even set down a bottle of soap without it possibly sliding off. I’m still looking for a small cabinet to fir to the right of the sink to add more storage, and the desired flat surface.
It’s also taken me longer to fill up this cabinet then it has for me to write about it. We still have bins full of random bathroom stuff that need to be properly stored. I think that might be tomorrow night’s task.

Pink Tile

Who would have thought that Greg and I might learn how to tile so we could put of MORE of this lovely pepto bismol pink tile. But that looks to be exactly what we are planning to do. It’s going to be a long while before we’re ready to take on redoing this entire bathroom (like well after that master bathroom I’m dreaming of). And do to what looked to be a minor plumbing repair, Greg ended up opening up a fairly significant hole in the wall.
So, what was the plumbing repair? The bathtub faucet had been dripping quite a bit. It wasn’t really bothering us at first, until a pink slime started to appear in the tub. We discovered that this pink slime is a bacteria that often shows up in bathrooms, and other damp areas, especially after a recent renovation...hmmm, like having all the wood floors sanded, maybe?
Last weekend I decided to tackle the slime with a scrub brush and bleach. We put a bucket under the drip to catch the water, and allow the tub to dry out. The bucket filled up completely after only a few hours, and we realized just how much water was actually being wasted. Greg decided to take action. As soon as one of the covers around the fauccet was loose, it became clear that many of the tiles were loose because the wall behind them was very wet. They were basically being held in place by tension. At least we got them off without breaking any, so we will be able to put them back up.
Greg managed to add a washer to the hot water valve which stopped the immediate leaking. A new part arrived during the week, which he installed last night. So, now, there is no more leaking. We just have to deal with the big gapping hole in the wall! We’re now debating updating the shower control all together to a modern temptrol instead of separate hot and cold valves. This story is definitely to be continued...

That is definitely not something I would have ever expected you to say! Maybe pink tile will be in next year though, who knows?! ;-)
